Mystery Writers as Pack Animals

I am just back home from five days of traveling for the annual MWA Edgars week followed by a booksigning at Salt and Pepper Books in Occoquan, VA, and then the Malice Domestic convention in Bethesda. And the party continues without me today at the Mystery Lovers Bookshop in Oakmont, PA. These events are exhausting, but wonderful–such fun to meet with fans, spend time with author friends that I usually only ‘see’ online, and have face time with my editor and agent and lots of other publishing folks. I promised myself two things this year–I would get some work done on the road, and take more pictures. Zero for zero:(.

Anyway, the picture on top is me with fellow Jungle Red Writers bloggers Rosemary Harris and Hallie Ephron, who was a nominee for the Mary Higgins Clark award for NEVER TELL A LIE. The next photo is from the culinary mystery booksigning with Sheila Connolly, Avery Aames, and Krista Davis at Salt and Pepper Books in Occoquan, VA. If you are a cookbook and food writing nut, this adorable store is not to be missed!

My  story, The Itinerary, had been nominated for an Agatha award for best short story–here are the five nominees after our panel discussing the hows and whys of short mystery fiction. (Left to right, Krista Davis, Avery Aames, Barb Goffman, moderator Melodie Johnson Howe, Dana Cameron, and me.)

Dana was awarded the prized Agatha teapot on Saturday night–but believe me, it really was an honor to be nominated in the first place. And besides, how could I feel badly when my sweet friend Krista had already given me a miniature teapot, just in case, because we all deserved to be winners?

And that’s what I love about this business–the friends I’ve made, both readers and writers. It’s a marvelously generous and interesting community–hanging out with these people makes all that time at the computer feel like a breeze.

Well, not exactly, but close!
